Capitol Hill
Ali George
W 66cm x L 55cm
$650
Created in response to the January 2021 riots in DC. I was distressed how the hands of mainly white men confused a domestic terrorist attack as the expression of their democratic right. I was moved by other hands protecting the elected representatives. The sinister and dark mist of the mob threatened the basis of democracy and the rule of law. The irony of Jefferson’s classification of books by the categories of memory, reason and imagination was almost visceral. Rust was collected in Washington DC for the fabric and rubbings taken at Washington University Medical Centre. Dyed scrim represents the sinister encroachment while Capitol Hill remains a symbol of hope. Machine stitched and quilted.
Just as the waters of a cascade, over time, carve the way through seeming impenetrable rock, the dancing frothy waters pulsate a renewed sense of life on the physical body. Instead of an eternity, in only a few moments a soul can be re-charged to the archetype of their inner small child: joyful, timeless, carefree. The water tickles and dances, teases, and refreshes. Is there a pleasure equal to sitting in the sound cave of a life-filled cascade? The creation of this hand stitched textile transported me to the rule free, restriction free, joy, playfulness and confidence of my internal inner child. It is an eclectic mix of fabrics including cottons, silk, polyester and sheers, which combine with big stitch to create a new fabric of the cascade.

Inspired by the presence of flowers seen in Margaret Olley’s still life paintings, individual fabric flowers have been hand stitched onto calico. The fabric collage was then made into this artist’s smock. Flowers painted and included in the titles of Olley’s paintings have had their names stitched on to the edging of the smock’s collar, sleeves and bottom of the garment. The smock can be worn with the colourful flowers to the front on happy, bright days and reversed for more muted tones on quieter reflective days.

In ancient lore the knight rides off to fight battles and to save the stricken damsel. But does she need saving? Could it be that she possesses powers beyond the physical, and the knight is fearful of this power so tries to control her? From ancient Celtic times to the present day, the need for control over the feminine is still ubiquitous. Domestic Violence numbers are too large to be ignored, and this insidious inequality is displayed in all echelons of society, from within unconscious inferences uttered in daily speech, to the highest levels of politics. This hand stitched textile is a collage of cotton fabrics with big stitch to hold together and add textural detail.

Malala
Kathryn Iliff
W 41cm x L 71cm
$350
As a schoolgirl in Pakistan in 2008 Malala Yousafzai experienced The Islamic Taliban burning down girls’ schools. Malala kept a diary of this time and consequently a book where she spoke out about the Taliban, was published in 2009. Her life was threatened, culminating in being shot in the face, requiring her and her family to flee to the UK. At 16 years of age, she addressed the United Nations and was later awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. This is Malala holding the prize high. She is standing amidst a ground of newspaper clippings dealing with women’s rights, subjugation and calls for equality in a patriarchal society. These headlines still could be found current today. The border tells of her traditional robes with silks which are the colour of the outfit she was wearing to receive the Noble Peace Prize.

Miss Fisher Heads Home from New Year’s Eve Party
Kathryn Iliff
W 16cm x L 16cm
$150
In the glamourous world in the years prior to WW2, Miss Phryne Fisher, the wealthy aristocrat and sleuth of TV and detective novels created by Australian author Kerry Greenwood, would no doubt have partied into the wee small hours. On New Year’s Day 1928, we can picture Miss Fisher walking out from the dance hall at Melbourne’s St Kilda to her waiting taxicab. She wanders with heels in one hand, twirling the gold cord from her sash in the other. As the dawn encroaches, she passes other party revellers, and makes her way home, slightly reeling and somewhat jaded now that the party is over. This hand stitched textile reflects edges crushed and crumpled after a night of dancing drinking, flirting, and eating. Cottons and speciality fabrics.

Pears
Ali George
W 98cm x L 108cm
$850
Pears was inspired by the paintings of Margaret Olley and her placement of pears. How quickly the ripened pear deteriorates yet Olleys’ retain their perfect shape and promise of sweet delight. The background on which the twelve pears are stitched is a colour study of Olley’s Boonah Landscape (1962) and I often travel the road where Olley painted the Scenic Rim vista. I stitched modern, strip pieced patterns that reflect The Hat Factory and Yellow rooms at the Tweed Regional Gallery. The pears were cut from a piece of commercial fabric gifted by a dear friend.

It is the landscape though that is indescribably beautiful. Raw. Arid. Rocky. Still. Rusty. Breathless. The ribbon of river way below eventually finds its way to the Gulf of Mexico. Hand printed fabrics using monoprinting with black inks, gold ribbon. Machine pieced and stitched, machine quilted.

The Asian sense of aesthetic and simplicity has always been a source of interest and imagination. Inspiration for this artwork stems from the traditional Korean “Kyop po” or wrapping cloth, used by common people to carry objects. This artwork has been created from tea bags, the drink of the common people. The simplicity of design and arrangement of exquisitely balanced colours are integral to the overall finished work. The addition of a second layer creates a more intense translucency, and the play between light and opacity, made possible through the use of visible seams, has created a strong sense of line, an inherent part of the overall design. Recycled and hand dyed teabags, cotton; bojagi technique.

Watershed
Ali George
W 77cm x L 114cm
$1300
As a subset of climate change, water – who can access it, who owns and distributes it, who profits from it, who controls it – will one day be the source of war. What flows away in drains is precious as gold yet rarely front of mind when we turn on a tap. Watershed uses hand dyed and printed fabrics, mainly through rubbings of drains and grates on retreat at The Outlook, Boonah in the log cabin tradition. Watershed is intended to challenge our thinking, from the comfort of our western homes and perspectives, about the most precious resource on the planet.
